A borate occurrence located in the NW¼NW¼ sec. 14, T27N, R1E, SBM, 2.8 km (1.7 miles) ENE of Furnace Creek (populated place), at the mouth of Furnace Creek Wash in Death Valley, on National Park Service land (Death Valley National Park). Owned by the U.S. Borax and Chemical Co. (1976). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters.
Mineralization is a Miocene lacustrine borate deposit (Deposit model information: Model code 260; USGS model code: 35b.3; Deposit model name: Lacustrine borates), hosted in the Miocene Furnace Creek Formation (tuff, clay, mud, mudstone, sandstone) and in unconsolidated Miocene sand & gravel. The ore body is 609.6 meters long. The borate-bearing zone trends NNW for 2,000 feet and occurs between 2 faults that also trend NNW. Local rocks include Quaternary alluvium and marine deposits and/or Plio-Pleistocene and Pliocene loosely consolidated deposits.
Local structures include 2 faults.
