A Mn occurrence/mine located in sec. 4, T2N, R12E, MDM, 3.0 km (1.8 miles) ENE of Carmen City, on the E slope of Carmen Peak (7 miles W of Altaville; go W along road from Altaville toward Copperopolis for 6.5 miles. Mine is on side near crest of Bear Mountain Ridge [Carmen Peak area]) (private lease). Discovered in 1917. Owned by W. M. Kellogg, California (1974). Operated by Wallace A. Russell, California (1974). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters.
Mineralization is a Mn deposit hosted in rocks of the Amador Group. The ore body strikes N30-35W and dips 70NE-40SW, at a thickness of 1.83 meters and a length of 9.45 meters. A bed of manganese oxide, 1 to 6 feet thick, is exposed for a length of 31 feet. The ore is enclosed in thick-bedded, white to yellowish brown chert. Manganese ore is mainly hard, brittle, blue-black psilomelane. Average grade is 40% Mn. Some ore contains oxidized light brown rhodochrosite, bementite, and some brown opaline material which might be relted to neotocite. Local rocks include Mesozoic volcanic rocks, unit 2 (Western Sierra Foothills and Western Klamath Mountains).
Workings include surface openings. The principal development is a T-shaped open cut 31 feet long, 3 to 5 feet wide, and up to 10 feet deep. There are also several other cuts.
