A former Au-Ag-Pb-Cu-Zn-baryte mine located in the SE¼ sec. 8, T21N, R5E, MDM, 1.5 km (5,000 feet) ESE of Big Bend Mountain summit (coordinates of record) and 2.6 km (8,600 feet) ESE of Big Bend (town). Operated by E. F. Allingham, Rt. 1, Oroville, California. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 500 meters.
NOTE: The MRDS database combines the Big Bend Mine and the Evening Star claim in two files. The third file (#10103433) presents data for the Evening Star claim standing alone.
Mineralization is a replacement deposit (deposit model 184: massive sulphide, kuroko; USGS model code 28a; Mark3 model number 93), hosted in greenstone, amphibolite and schist. The ore body strikes N30W and dips 62NE at a thickness of 1.07 meters. Alteration at the Evening Star claim is local. In adits and crosscuts, a thickness of 50 feet or more is leached and altered to a soft mass of clay and silica. Small crusts of azurite and malachite occur in the leached zone near the surface. Local rocks include Mesozoic volcanic rocks, unit 2 (Western Sierra Foothills and Western Klamath Mountains).
Workings include underground openings with a total length of 294.44 meters.
They are comprised of a 134 foot deep shaft and a 360 foot deep shaft plus 472 feet of drifts. At the Evening Star claim there is a 120 foot adit on strike of the vein. 50 feet from the portal, a winze was sunk 12 feet in the adit floor.
Production data are found in: Logan (1930), and in Goodwin (1957). Individual commodity information is from the Southern Pacific Co. (McCulloch, W.C., Oesterling, W.A., Spurck, W.H., & Tischler, M.S. (1964): 63).
Analytical data results: 6 foot thickness of vein said to carry $4 to $5 of free gold (period values). An 8 inch thiockness is said to assay 6.62% to 13% Cu, 1 to 5 ounces of silver, 80 (?) Au, and some zinc. Production history details recovery percentages: Ore Cu: 2 weight per cent; Pb: 0.2 weight per cent; and, Zn: 12 weight per cent.
