A laterite deposit/pit operation located in the W½ sec. 16 & in sec. 21, T6N, R9E, MDM, 1.0 km (0.6 mile) SSW of Clarksona, ESE of Duttschke Hill. Owned & operated by North American Refractories Co., Division of Eltra Corporation (1989). Leased to & operated by Gladding, McBean and Co. (1948-?). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.
Mineralization is a laterite deposit. Local rocks include Eocene nonmarine rocks, unit 1 (Northern and Central California) and/or Mesozoic volcanic rocks, unit 2 (Western Sierra Foothills and Western Klamath Mountains).
Workings include surface openings. The material was blasted and loaded into trucks with a power shovel.
The presence of laterite in the area was noted by geologists working in the area since 1865 but use was not made of the material until 1949, when Permanente Cement Co. started using it in Portland cement. The mining was restricted to the upper, more weathered part of the laterite profile where silica has been leached out. The industrial value of the laterite was in its relatively low silica content (25-30% SiO2).
