Located c. 70 km SE of Rome, the Ernici occurrence consists of c. 20 monogenetic cones built mainly through explosive activity, which produced scoriae, some pyroclastic flows and surge deposits, and subordinate lava flows (Civetta et al. 1981). The basement rocks comprise essentially Mesozoic limestones and Upper to Middle calcareous and arenaceous sediments.

Ultrapotassic rocks were erupted between 0.7 and 0.2 Ma and less potassic rocks from 0.2 to 0.1 Ma (Civetta et al. 1981).
