It is the main volcanic island of the homonymous archipelago. Three complexes of intrusive and extrusive rocks: Remedious complex, Quixaba formation; San Jose formation.

The island covers 16.9 km², with c. 20 islets extending over a further c. 1.5 km². It rises from a base at a depth of c. 4000 m and is the easternmost of a chain of seamounts that extends westwards towards the coast of Brazil.
