Ain Barbar zinc mine

Aïn Barbar was part of the "Vieille Montagne Agence Hammam".
The deposit was consecutively operated by the original concessionaires, Messrs. Lebaille, Lecoq and Berthon until 1867; the Algerian Mineral Company, after 1874 and until 1879; the Vieille-Montagne after 1888.

In 1900, the mine was bought by the Société d'Aïn-Barbar.

Langhian (16-15 My) terrestrial palaeogeothermal field (stratified aquifer) with polymetallic Fe/Zn/Cu/Pb-veins.

Host rocks: Nappe of Numidian clay-quartz, Oligo-Miocene flysch, and Cretaceous clay-carbonate flysch (deeply altered by the high energy geothermal system).

The flyschs are crosscut by microgranite and rhyolite dikes; propylitic, sericitic and potassic alteration.
The silicification is important.

The vein mineralization is located in shear zones (Playfair and Abaïd veins), and is quite complex:

- Early stage: Chlorite-epidote

- Main stage:
Sphalerite, pyrrhotite H
Quartz, sphalerite
Quartz (silicification), chlorite, phengite
Illite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite M
Pyrite, calcite

- Late stage:
Vein breccia fillings, comb quartz with microcrystalline quartz and chalcedony.

Evolution: 130–80 bar, 320-180 °C.
