Name(s) in local language(s):
(Quadeville East Mine; Wal-Gem East Quarry; McCoy Beryl Mine; Pegmatite on Lot 23)
The initial discovery of beryl on this property was by Miller in 1897. It was first opened in 1926 by T. B. Caldwell of Perth and 4456 pounds of beryl were obtained in 1927. The property was dormant until 1935 when the deposits were taken over by Renfrew Minerals Limited. Development work was done in 1935 and 1936. Canadian Beryllium Mines and Alloys developed and operated the deposit for beryl and feldspar; 180 tons of beryl pegmatite ore (maximum 6.82 percent beryl, 0.71 percent BeO) was stockpiled. Feldspar was produced in small amounts but this was not recorded. In 1950 57 100 pounds of beryl concentrate was sold from this stockpile and the Lot 30, Concession XV-property stockpile. The Wal-Gem Lapidary Company currently operates the quarry for mineral specimens and collecting-for-a-fee by rockhounds.
In granite pegmatite located about 2.1 km north of Quadeville, and approximately 500m east of the road leading north from the town (The Letterkenny Road). The area has also been refered to as a pegmatite on lot 23, concession XV, Lyndoch Township.
The occurrence is made up of two mines: Quadeville East Mine (Beryl Pit), & the Quadeville West Mine (Rose Quartz Quarry).
The Beryl Pit is made up of an open cut 76 m long, 15 m wide, & 2 to 11 m deep. The western part of the cut exposes microcline-perthite-cleavelandite-quartz pegmatite containing tourmaline. The eastern part of the cut exposes albite-perthitic microcline-quartz-biotite pegmatite.
An east-west trending surface mine in a pegmatite connected to the Rose Quartz Pit a couple of km west. Mined for beryl in the 1930's. This is considered part of the Bancroft area.
The Beryl Pit is currently owned by a company called Aquarose (2011)
The Beryl Pit is a fee for collecting site.
The GPS coordinates are of the MacEwen gas station in Quadeville, where you must purchase your permit to visit the pit & there you will get directions to the pit.

Colour: commonly purple, & pink in very rare conditions Fluorescence: purple, & green Description: Most fluorite that is found here is the purple variety, it fluoresces purple under long & short wave light. A very rare variety of fluorite (Pink Fluorite) occurs here also but in very small amounts, it looses its pink color after short exposure to sunlight.
