The Lorena gold deposit is currently operating (January 2019) approximately 15km to the east of Cloncurry, northwest Queensland. The project is owned by Malachite Resources, but BIM Gold is acting as the mine operator, while Ore Processing Services is responsible for ore processing.

The deposit is part of the Pumpkin Gully Goldfield, worked from late 1880’s
and mainly abandoned in 1910-20’s due to water shortages and better money to be had in Cloncurry and Mount Isa.

A small pit in oxidised ore was opened in 1992 by Neil Lucas and Bill Matthews. Production of gold from this pit up until 1999 has totalled approximately 4,200 ounces.

Major open pit mining by Malchite Resources commenced in October 2017, with the processing plant commissioned in the same year. Ore processing at Lorena commenced in February 2018, and first gold was poured at the end of March 2018. The mine is expected to produce between 30,000oz and 35,000oz of gold from the open-cut operation during its anticipated production life of 18 months, and there are plans to continue mining underground. The Lorena gold mine is estimated to contain a JORC-compliant mineral resources of 179,500t grading 2g/t Au, containing 56,600oz gold.

Gold mineralisation is controlled by a south-west steeply dipping silicified and brecciated fault/shear system to 12m wide, within the mid-Proterozoic Eastern Succession of the Mount Isa Inlier. Mineralisation is hosted by metasiltstones of the Toole Creek Volcanics, a sequence of mafic metavolcanic rocks interbedded with variably calcareous and pelitic metasediments. The Toole Creek Volcanics are a part of the Soldiers Cap Group, which contains most of the major ore deposits of the Mt Isa Inlier. The deposit is adjacent to a dolerite intrusion, and calcsilicate and dolomite rocks of the Corella Formation.

The mineralisation contains both massive and stringer type copper-gold sulphide mineralisation. The shear zones host sedimentary units, breccias and fault gouge with highly variable quartz-carbonate-sulphide pods in breccias. The deposit hosts minor copper mineralisation within the two main gold zones. it contains magnetite and polymetallic sulphides (Au, Cu, Co, As, Bi, Zn, Pb), and may be a low -T IOCG related to Ernest Henry, Starra, Monakoff and other deposits in the region (Lilly, 2013).

The sulphide pods are made up of arsenopyrite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and bismuthinite, with a gangue of quartz, chlorite and calcite, in quartz-chlorite-muscovite-albite host sediments. Gold occurs in with a late arsenopyrite stage, locally overprinting a fluorite +/- baryte stage, with rare Bi- sulphosalts (Lilly, 2013).
