Mina Alcaparrosa, Cerritos Bayos, Calama, El Loa, Antofagasta, Chile

Located on the north side of Cerro Alcaparrosa, about 3 km SW of the railroad station of Cerritos Bayos.

Oxidation takes place under extremely dry conditions. The water table is very deep and rains are infrequent (approximately every 10 years). Some sulfates are dissolved and redeposited, while the newly oxidized materials occur in extremely acidic conditions.
