Plankogel (Antonistollen; Neu Barbara Stollen), Gasen, Birkfeld, Steiermark, Österreich
Historic (Middle Age - 1858) iron (magnetite) mining area, located ca. 2.5 km south of Gasen at an elevation of ca. 1300 m asl, slightly north of the Plankogel.
On the north slope of the Plankogel 9 adits were driven, up to 150 m long. Several are still visible, especially the Antonistollen and the Neu Barbarastollen. There was also some open pit mining.
On the south slope a small deposit was mined for a short time.
The mine was in operation, with long interruptions, until 1858, when the last owner, Graf Samuel Festetits, went bankrupt.
Until 1812 the ore was shipped to a furnace in Birkfeld.
In the book Bergbau in der Steiermark (2005) it is reported that in 1947 and 1948 baryte was mined at this location. This is an error, baryte was found at nearby “Kogl, Gschaid (Weber 1990)”, as noted by Franz Bernhard.
The minerals are found mainly in several, still visible, dumps with approx. locations listed below. The adits are mostly inaccessible by now. In 2012 (and 2016) the Antonistollen was accessible up to the second crosscut.
