Copper and cobalt mines 14 km SSW of Nyköping. Copper and cobalt occur disseminated as sulphides in skarn ores. Producing only copper from around the year 1420 when the Swedish King "Erik av Pommern" gave the miners the mining privileges. The Mine "Storgruvan" was abandoned during the 16th century because a pegmatite lens cut the ore and miners lost trace of it.
Reopened successfully first in the 1750s, the cobalt content was discovered around 1790 and produced as a valuable secondary product. Mines finally closed around 1890.

By far the richest and largest mine was Storgruvan (de Besche'ska, Stor Mine)- two well known parts were called Görans Shaft and Lovisins Shaft. Lesser production from Adolfsbergsgruvan, Kabbelgruvan and Österbergsgruvan. Among the other mines were Sofia Magdalena gruvan, Näsmansgruvan and Kattgruvan.

According to Tegengren (1924) the total copper production from 1613 until 1905 was 1354 tons and 61,970 tons of cobalt.


NOTE:

1. According to the type description of both Kieftite and Oenite, the type material were collected "from the dumps at the abandoned mine in Cu-Co sulfide skarns of the central zone" (Dobbe et al., 1994; Dobbe and Zakrewski, 1998); these authors did not reveal the name of the "abandoned mine".
