The Tolbachik volcanic complex consists of two volcanoes, Plosky (flat) Tolbachik (3,085 m) and Ostry (sharp) Tolbachik (3,682 m). Plosky Tolbachik is a flat-topped shield volcano; Ostry Tolbachik is a peaked stratovolcano. As Ostry is the mountain's highest point, the entire mountain is often referred to as "Ostry Tolbachik".
Novy Tolbachik or New Tolbachik volcano is situated in the southernmost part of the Kliuchevskoy group of volcanoes. The eruption of 1975-76 formed the Southern and Northern Breakthrough. Three scoria cones numbered 1 to 3 make up the northern breakthrough, the fourth cone the southern breakthrough.
Tolbachik's hematite may be epitaxially overgrown by cassiterite, rutile, tripuhyite, magnesioferrite, gahnite, cuprospinel, and corundum.
