A large iron and sulfur mine formed by impregnation and replacement in Pleistocene andesite and tuff strata. Four ore beds, the largest measuring 1 km x 800m x 80m, dipping 10%. The major ore mineral was marcasite! In the 1950s this was the 3rd largest mine in Japan in terms of gross tonnage of ore moved: 702,000 tons in 1958, including 469,000 tons FeS2 and 200,000 t of sulfur. The ore was burned to produce SO2 for sulfuric acid production and the clinker was used as iron ore.
The mine opened in 1914 and closed in 1971.
