Mine d'uranium de Pen ar Ran
This mine, worked in the 2nd half of the 20th century, was one of the many opened in France in search of uranium ore. In the surrounding country (Guérande), several research works have been performed in the past (galleries, drillings, open cuts) for uranium. All are either flooded or filled nowadays (2010).
Another mine existed on the nearby beach, worked at the beginning of the 20th century for tin. The pit hole is still visible atop a large rock (circle of red bricks). Cassiterite can be now found in the sands.
Pen ar ran, often misspelled as "pen hareng" or "penarran" means "cape of the land" from "Pen", "head, headland", "ar", "of" and "ran", "land, country".
