Mina Virgen del Castellar (Mina El Castellar), Villarrubia de Santiago (Ocaña), Toledo, Castilla-La Mancha, España
The mines in the Tertiary gypsum and marls escarpment over the Tagus river in Villarrubia de Santiago were exploited at least since the 18th century to obtain salt. In 1807, M. Dumeril found a mineral that was characterized by Brongniart, who gave the name glauberite. For many years, this mine was the only known locality of glauberite.
When Brongniart (1808) published his discovery, he located erroneously the mine in “Villarrubia, prés d’Ocagna, dans la Nouvelle-Castille”. Ocaña (Ocagna)is the most significant locality in the surrounding area but is not near Villarrubia de Santiago.
