Locality type:

A U-V-Fe-Mo mining sub-district located in the area around Smith Lake. Discovered in 1950. Operated during the period 1951-1983.

The location is accurate for the Black Jack No. 2 Mine. The mines are concentrated along a northwesterly trend from Grants to Smith Lake. The Mariano Lake (1963) Quadrangle also covers a portion of this district.

Controls for ore emplacement included sedimentary features and structures (cross-beds, permeability, faults). Regional geologic structures include the Mariano (Smith Lake) anticline, Big Draw fault zone, and the Bluewater fault. Local rocks include the Mancos Shale, lower part.
Structure: Mariano (smith lake) anticline, big draw fault zone, bluewater fault

Ores(s): Sedimentary features and structures (cross-beds, permeability, faults)
