The Kvikne group of mines and prospect, the Kvikne mines (Kviknegruvene) are located 5km ESE of Yset, in Kvikne Østfjell behind Mt. Kaltberget. The mining area covers an area about 30 km2.
The orebodies lies within strongly folded metasediments and metavolcanics in the central Norwegian Caledonides. The Cu-Zn sulphide ore deposits were found in 1629 and mining (for Cu) started in 1629. The mines were closed down in 1812. Small scale prospecting continued until World War I.
The Mining Field can be divided in 4 areas:
1) The Eastern zone (the eldest area with the main mines Gaben Gottes, Segen Gottes, Banken, Mine 1707 and Storbekken prospect)
2) The Vang mines in the western part (with the mines Øvre Vang, Nedre Vang, Vangsberget, Odden I and Odden prospect)
3) Dals mines (in area in the middle with the mines Dals and Odden II) and
4) Estenvangen with several small prospects in the S and SW (Estenvangen I and II, Kojan, Grubeåsen and Berstjern I, II and III (Nordre, Midtre and Søndre Berstjern).
The Kaltberget and Olkar mines do not belong to the Kvikne Mines, but are located in the same area. These mines were working Ni/Cu deposits.
From Berg et al (2016):
The ore was probably discovered around 1630. There were two mining periods: 1632-1677 and 1710-1814. The mines produced ca. 7,4 Kt copper, and employed at its most 200 workers (ca. 1650). The main smelter was located at Innset, about 20 km NNW for Kvikne, where the offices of the mining company also were located. Smaller smelters were located at Nåyårdalen, Breivad (Botnan), Børli Ya, Sverja and Orkla.
The coordinates are for the parish of Kvikne.
