The Goboboseb Mountains cover an area of 1100 km² and are assigned to the Awahab Formation consisting of interbedded basalts and quartz latites that form part of the 132-135 million-year-old Etendeka Group. Strong evidence suggests the source of the Goboboseb volcanic rocks comes from the Messum Complex. The highest peak of these mountains is the Tafelkop.

NOTE: The actual mountains where the famous amethyst and quartz crystals (sometimes in sceptre form) are mined are the Goboboseb Mountains (basalts of volcanic origin), located approximately 35 km west of the Brandberg (specimen labels often give the locality as Brandberg). The name "Brandberg crystal" or "Brandberg quartz" originates from the fact that the Brandberg (granite massif!) is a worldwide known name and it is easier to explain than the Goboboseb range.
