A former underground asbestos mine/group of claims located in secs. 19 & 30, T1N, R17E, about 3 miles SSE of Granite Butte, and about 12½ miles just N of E of Globe and 5 miles NNE of Cutter, on Indian Reservation land. Prospected 1922; reopened 1950 and closed 1953. Owned by the Metate Asbestos Mines Co. (1950- ). Includes the Wonder claims and some of the Silk claims.
Mineralization is a vein deposit with a linear ore body hosted in the Mescal limestone and underlying diabase sill that both dip 20º to 30º SW. The ore zone is 0.25 meters thick, strikes N70W and dips 30SW and is comprised of cross-fiber asbestos in serpentine zones.
The ridge is a local structure that is made up of fault blocks of the Apache group of sediments, with a few short, very minor folds.
Workings: the No. 1 mine is developed by an adit and 2 exploratory diamond drill holes. The NOo. 2 Mine contains a stope about 100 feet long and 30 to 40 feet wide. Production was a small amount of asbestos (before 1925).
Assay data: 1 to 3 inches, harsh asbestos fiber.
