Placer Au-Ni-PGE (Pt-Ir)-Cr-Fe deposits located in sec. 36, T38S, R9W, WM, in Siskiyou National Forest and Illinois National Wild and Scenic River area (designated wilderness land). The deposits are located in Josephine Creek and in the Illinois River from the mouth of Josephine Creek downstream to the mouth of Deer Creek. Many of the workings are in sec. 36 on Josephine Creek. Discovered in 1850. First production was in 1852. MRDS location given is for the mine symbol near the center of sec. 36 shown on the topo map, accurate within area. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.

Mineralization is a placer Au-PGE deposit (Mineral occurrence model information: Model code 119; USGS model code 39a; BC deposit profile C01. C02; Deposit model name:Placer Au-PGE; Mark3 model number 54). Controls for ore emplacement included stream hydraulics. Local rocks include ultramafic and related rocks of ophiolite sequences (Jurassic).
