Localized in Mt. Średniak.
Very rich mining history concerns both the uranium mine and other mines within Podgórze, that is now a district within the town of Kowary.
The mine is now inactive but "Kopalnia Podgórze" offers rich sights.
From the "Kopalnia Podgórze" data:
In 1925, uranium ores were detected in Kowary. The former Soviet Union began initial exploitation in 1948. After giving it back to Poland (the "Podgórze" mine was constructed in 1950), the mine was transformed into "Zakłady Przemysłowe R-1" (a kind of industrial works). The exploitation finally ceased in 1958 when the "Podgórze" mine was closed. However, then (1966) uranium concentrates began to be produced in the area - an activity lasting until 1972. "Zakłady Górnicze Kowary-Podgórze" were existing until 1993.
In the meantime, there were two other kinds of activities related to the mine:
- Underground Radon Inhalatory (constructed in 1969 and lasting until ~1991-1993; then re-opened in 2002 and still active), with numerous medical applications of the uranium-ore-derived radon emanations - a very unique site
- sightseeing (since 2014 in the "Kopalnia Podgórze" case, although sightseeing in this area is known from ~2000), with rich offer
Adits:
- 9: exploratory & initial exploration adit; now part of the sights
- 9a: related to exploratory & initial mining activity of the late 1970s and early 1980s
- 19a: a transport adit, built in 1956, now part of the sights
- 16, with a related heap
- 17, with a related heap
- 18, with a related heap
- 19, with large heap related; built in 1951
The mine is spatially related to the Liczyrzepa (formerly known as Rübezahl) mine which was initially related with fluorite and Cu-Ag mining.
Geology: metamorphic rocks (mainly granite-gneisses and gneisses, with micaceous schists and rare amphibolite schists inserted), ca. 2.5 km S from their contact with the Karkonosze granite. Uranium mineralization deposition is tectonically driven and is either found in a cemented tectonic breccia or as impregnations on shales. The main ore, which is the "pitchblende" variety of uraninite, forms lenses (up to 2 cm thick) in calcite.
