The San Juan Mountains are mostly co-extensive with the San Juan Volcanic field, a large area in southwestern Colorado, roughly triangular in shape, that includes many metal mining areas but also the zeolite producing outcrops west of Wolf Creek Pass. The San Juan Mountains are mostly developed on a huge pile of volcanic rocks including flows, welded tuffs, lahar, etc. that were erupted from many large caldera structures that are scattered throughout the region. Some of the calderas occur in clusters, overlapping or nested within larger structures. The San Juans generally extend from just west of Telluride, near the northwest corner, to the Bonanza area at the northeast corner and then south-southeast past Creede, Platoro and Wolf Creek Pass ending a short distance into New Mexico.
