A former small surface and underground Ag-Pb-Cu-Zn-Au-Mo-U mine located in the center (NE¼ ?) of sec. 13, T.14S., R.1E. (Quijotoa Mts 15 minute topo map), 11½ miles N of the Quijotoa Trading Post. The Black Prince Mine is listed in the molybdenum file as being in secs. 24 & 13, T 14S, R1E. Owned by the Black Prince Metal Production Co.; and the Ajo Mines Corp. NOTE: Alternate coordinates provided: 32.2067N, 112.2222W.
Mineralization is spotty and generally weak, oxidized argentiferous galena with other sulfides in quartz-calcite gangue along a strong fault zone between Laramide metamorphic gneiss and schist and faulted Paleozoic (?) limestone and Cretaceous beds. Numerous intrusive dikes. Mineralization also includes secondary copper minerals.
Workings are shaft and open cut operations. Sporadic production of some 50 or more tons of ore occurred from the 1880's to 1924, averaging about 9 oz. Ag/T, 11% Pb, and 1% Cu.
Section Unsurveyed. From Sells go NW on Ajo Road to Casa Grande, turn off (21.6 miles); follow this road 2.2 miles, turn left up Mine Road for 0.5 miles. The mine is 100 yards past the end of the road. Location by these directions led to a shaft on the Quijotoa Mountains Quadrangle.
