Gold placers in the river running through middle of city of La Paz. A 7Kg(!) nugget was found here in Spanish colonial times, and periodic "rushes" have happened since then, including in early 2003. Since the river is now largely untreated sewage water, panning is not recommended for tourists! The origin of the gold probably lies in the granitic rocks of Mt Huayna Potosi (qv).
