Rombach-Martelange (Luxembourgish: Rombech-Maartel) is a small town in the commune of Rambrouch, in western Luxembourg.
The first family-operated slate underground quarry was created around 1790 in the Martelange (Belgium) region. The men were digging the blue stone with a hammer and a pick and packing the slate on a man's back climbing ladders and stairs. Towards the end of the 19th century, the various family businesses were almost all taken over by a German family which had the capital necessary to ensure the virtual monopoly of the slate quarries and to invest in the equipment of the mines. With the installation of steam engines and the construction of the Jangeli railway which allowed the export of slate products, the extraction of slate took on an industrial character. Six hundred people worked around 1900 in Haut-Martelange. After the 1960s, the decline of the slate industry with the appearance of new roofing materials and the importation of cheap foreign slates could not be reversed. In 1986 all extraction of slate stone stopped in Luxembourg.
