Punta del Lago or Punta del Lago Nord (the appositive Nord is added to distinguish it from the homonymous mountain situated ca. 2.5 km to the south) is located between Monte Pian Real to the northeast and Monte Rocciavrè to the west.
While the southeastern and southern slopes of Punta del Lago (located in the municipal territory of Coazze) are made of metagabbro, the northwestern and northern slopes (located mainly in the municipal territory of Villar Focchiardo and partly in that of San Giorio di Susa) consist of serpentinite, crossed by Alpine metamorphic veinlets with fibrous minerals (chrysotile).
The most typical rodingite mineral from this locality is clinochlore, which appears as large crystals with one or more of their surfaces coated with amber-yellow crystals of andradite var. topazolite.
Note: in mineral collections, minerals from Punta del Lago are frequenty labelled as from Cassafrera, i.e., the ca. 2km-long and 1.4-1.8km-wide morainic deposit, located at the base of the arquate Punta Costabruna-Monte Pian Real-Punta del Lago-Monte Rocciavrè-Punta Cristalliera-Punta Malanotte-Punta Pian Paris ridge forming the head of Vallone del Gravio.
