Puzzler claim
A Pb-Ag-F-V-Mo-Cu mine located in the SW¼ sec. 31, T.4S., R.18W. (protracted). Owned by Adams, Stephans, Hudson.
Mineralization is irregular and spotty masses of coarsely crystalline galena, usually coated with anglesite, cerussite and lead oxides, in a gangue of crystalline fluorite and brown to black calcite with iron-stained gouge and brecciated wall rock, in lensing fault zones up to 8 feet wide, cutting Mesozoic shale, metamorphosed to slate. The fault zone strikes S.23ºE. and dips 70º NE. Intrusions of diorite-porphyry dikes and a few small irregular masses of quartz porphyry. Vanadinite and wulfenite are found locally in vugs in the mineralized zones and some minor oxidized copper minerals.
Workings include 4 shafts, the principal shaft (the Puzzler shaft) is about 200 feet deep; about 100 feet of drifts on the 55 level; 230 feet of drifts also on the 110, and 290 feet of drifts on the 175 levels. Operated as the principal mine in the group sporadically from the early 1900's through about 1952. The group produced some 240 tons or ore averaging about 49% lead, 18 oz. Ag/T, and a very little Au and Cu.
