The Ohio and Isle Royale Mining Company held several leases on Isle Royale that were later worked by many other companies. The company itself focused much of its resources on the Ransom townsite and mine. Beginning in 1843, workers began clearing land for the townsite in addition to exploring the area. The townsite was platted by Leander Ransom in 1846. Around the same time, miners began driving shafts where promising signs of copper mineralization was noted. Eventually, six shafts were sunk around the townsite. Sometime in the late 1840s, a smelter was built for Ransom and other nearby companies, but was said to be poorly constructed and never used. By 1850, all activity at the site was limited to exploration work; it is not known if the copper or the funds to mine it dried up.
By 1866, the company abandoned the site and all the buildings were consumed by fire. In later years, the townsite was sued for a sawmill, a garden, and a Civilian Conservation Corps camp. Even though the company abandoned Ransom, it did not cease to operate, but rather moved its operations to Houghton County on the mainland and opened the Isle Royal Mine on veins discovered by, no coincidence, Ransom Sheldon.
Today, the townsite and mine are located near the Daisy Farms Campground. Very few of the building foundations remain, but many of the shafts and exploration pits are visible.
