The Wendigo Mine was the last copper mine to operate on Isle Royale. The mine was owned by the Wendigo Copper Company, an offshoot of the Isle Royale Land Corporation ltd. Exploration work began in 1889 with actual mining beginning in 1890. By May of 1891, five exploration shafts had been dug and over 9,000 feet of diamond drill holes were bored. Company reports state that much was learned about the geology of Isle Royale, but very little copper was found and the company dissolved in October, 1892. In 1896, renewed interest in the property led to exploration work, but a bank failure stopped all work. In 1898 and 1899, additional exploration was conducted, but work was ceased before any results were obtained. No other exploration was conducted after this point.
Some foundational remnants can be seen at the minesite along the East Huginnin Trail.
Deposit: 16 drill holes and seven tunnels were explored
