Short Mine; Kelly Mine; Kelley Mine; Lead Bullion Mine
A former small underground Pb-Ag-Cu-Au mine on 9 unpatented claims located in the NW ¼ sec. 25, T.23S., R.20E, approximately 4 miles SW of Ramsey, on National Forest land. Produced 1940-1949. Operated by Kelly Short, A.R. & T.H. Short.
Mineralization is lead carbonate and sulfide in irregular, bedded replacement bodies in exotic blocks of Paleozoic limestone in Triassic-Jurassic volcanics near a large thrust fault. The ore zone strikes N35W and dips 45NE. Ore control was proximity to thrust fault, which thrust Precambrian granite over sediments and volcanics in a plane dipping 65NW. Ore concentration was strong leaching. No mineralization in the granite.
Workings include an inclined shaft 180 feet long with workings at 50, 100, and 180 foot levels. Workings total 152.4 meters in length and 40.84 meters in depth. Total production during the periods 1940-1944 and 1948-1949 amounted to some 870 tons.
