Coal was gathered here in the 1600s. Organized coal mining began in 1620 for the construction of the nearby Fortress of Louisbourg and exports to Boston began in 1724. Coal mining continues to this day, but on a very limited scale. Some of the mines extend underwater for kilometers under the Gulf of St Lawrence.
