Acqua Mintina Cave opens in the lowest layer of the Calcare di Base Formation (Miocene) in contact with the underlying Tripoli marls. Above the Calcare di Base Formation there are selenitic layers belonging to the upper Gypsum Unit of the Pasquasia Formation.

Acqua Mintina is a 140-m-long fossil cave and the conduit size decreases inland. The cave entrance is perched about 20 m on the right bank of the Rizzuto stream, at 296 m of elevation, and is located approximately 7.5 km NW of Butera. Its walls are copiously covered by yellowish sulphur deposits, whereas on the floor it is possible to find inactive pools filled with selenitic gypsum crystals. Celestine is authigenic. Deposits of metavoltine (a quite rare sulfuric acid speleogenetic mineral) occur in the entrance hall of Acqua Mintina Cave, demonstrating H2SO4 degassing to produce a peculiar sulfuric acid association of minerals.



Note: the toponym Acqua Mintina is a Sicilianism that indicates malodorous water coming from sulphur springs.
