Cava di basalto (Cava di San Giovanni Ilarione), San Giovanni Ilarione, Provincia di Verona, Veneto, Italia
Abandoned basalt quarry at the base of the hill, on whose summit the settlement of Castello was built. Remnants of the famous columnar basalt, described in 1778 by John Strange, are still observable. A quarry face, located in the north, was exploited until the beginning of the 2010s.
Mantle peridotite xenoliths (spinel lherzolite) included in the alkaline lava have been the object of various studies (Andreatta, 1938; Morten, 1971; Morten & Bondi, 1981; Morten, 1987; Morten et al., 1989; Siena & Coltorti, 1989; De Francesco & Morten, 1991; Beccaluva et al. 2001; Gasperini et al., 2006). Most of the xenoliths show superimposed textural evidence of metasomatic processes, consisting of reaction patches and spongy clinopyroxenes, variably associated with glass and secondary olivine (forsterite), clinopyroxene, spinels, and plagioclase.
