An U-Mn occurrence/mine located in approximate sec. 5, T27N, R12E, G&SRM, 8.7 km (5.4 miles) SW of Sand Springs Mesa (summit) (coordinates of record). This locality is not listed in the USGS MRDS database. The geographic coordinates presented for this locality are approximate to the center of sec. 5.
Mineralization is an U-Mn deposit hosted in black, carbonaceous conglomerate and sandy shales of the Kayenta Formation. Manganese oxides (psilomelane) and carbonized wood with secondary uranium minerals are present.
Workings include surface openings comprised of rim strippings.
Production was 61 tons of ore @ 0.10% U3O8; 0.10% V2O5 (1950, 1952, 1956). Radiation level is 6X background.
