The first Polish Cu-mine opened in Silesia after the end of the World War II, on the site of a former Zechstein limestone/marl quarry. Belong to the so called “Old Copper Basin” mines, operated between years 1954-1968 with the headquarter and the processing plants in "Lena" mine located in the area of Wilków near Złotoryja. The production volume totaled 4,025,847 tonnes of copper ore. "Lena" was shut down after the new mines were opened in the vicinity of Lubin -Polkowice and the mining production in Nowy Kościół has become unprofitable.
Copper deposits in Nowy Kościół occur in marls, limestone dolomites and limestones in the Zechstein sediments of the geological unit called Leszczyna syncline, that belong to the eastern part of the North-Sudetic Synclinorium. Marls are not homogeneous rocks that consists of a series of smaller and larger layers of marly slate and limestone arranged alternately. Despite numerous layers of limestone, the nature of the whole series is rather marly, hence his name. The thickness of the layers is 2-3m, exceptionally it may reach up to 4m. Lowest parts are the copper-bearing, spotted marls and the upper ones are lead-bearing marls. Minerals occurring in the deposit are mainly bornite, chalcocite, chalcopyrite and covellite in the lowest series and pyrite, galena in the upper series. In the fault zones, as well as in the vicinity of outcrops - secondary minerals: azurite, malachite, cerusite, rare native copper and silver.
