The Charles H. Sawyer Quarry is an abandoned quarry located in the W½, section 11, Lime City, Perrysburg Township, Wood County, Ohio. The rock formations exposed at this locality are the Greenfield Dolomite and underlying Guelph Formation.
The locality first began producing aggregates in the 1880s by Charles Henry Sawyer, who purchased 110 acres of land. Like many other quarries around Toledo, this quarry produced aggregate for roads and the glass industry. Once hauled to the surface the stone was crushed or baked in a kiln mixed with limestone ash for cement. Later, Sawyer sold some of his land to the Toledo and Ohio Central Railroad, operated by the New York Central Railway, in exchange for the railroad to build an active siding to his quarry. Another portion of Sawyer's land was sold to the Maumee Stone Company, which later would become the Maumee Stone Company Lime City Quarry.
In 1932, the quarry was abandoned due to water filling the quarry. The land itself though still belonged to the Sawyer family for the next 84 years until Ann B. Sawyer, Charles’s descendant, donated the land to the Black Swamp Conservancy and the Wood County Park District in 2014. Today the quarry is now a park.
In 2009, water was starting to be diverted from the Charles Sawyer quarry into the nearby Stoneco Lime City Quarry (the former Maumee Stone Co.), flooding it. In just two years, the Charles Sawyer quarry was completely emptied of water.
This locality was not mentioned in either edition of Ernest Carlson's Minerals of Ohio, possibly because no historical reference stated that minerals were found here. Joshua Peters and Mark Camp (2016) later reported that calcite and celestine have been found at the quarry.
