Sylvan Lake is a small impoundment in the midst of massive outcrops of Harney Peak granite. In 1881 Theodore Reder built a dam across a narrow opening in the granite blocking Sunday Gulch Creek to form the lake. The lake and surrounding area is part of Custer State Park and collecting is not allowed, however, the geology of the Harney Peak granite can be observed on the many trails. Opportunities to photograph pegmatite veins and in-situ minerals are abundant. Most importantly it is the trail head for the 7 mile roundtrip hike to Black Elk Peak and the spectacular views of the granite core of the Black Hills.
