Historic gold mine.
Formerly on the shoreline, now occupied by houses in Thames, adjacent to the Vanguard and May Queen mines. It occupies the former Hauraki Extended claim. A shaft called Deep Sinker was on the lease, down to 462 feet, sunk by Standard Exploration Company of London. A drive was then cut 450 feet northwards towards the Vanguard lease.
Most of the lease of 100 acres carried surface alluvium, with andesite only occupying 11 acres. The lease contained a series of small parallel quartz veins.
Information found mainly relates to 1906 to 1908, when the Shortland Flat Gold Mining Company was in disagreement with the Thames Drainage Board over payments for the working of the Thames Hauraki Pump. The warden determined it was unfair for each mine in the neighbourhood to pay an equal amount, when the Shortland Flats claim had very limited workings, and the pump only partially drained the property.
The Mindat co-ordinates are approximate.

Regional Geology
This geological map and associated information on rock units at or nearby to the coordinates given for this locality is based on relatively small scale geological maps provided by various national Geological Surveys. This does not necessarily represent the complete geology at this locality but it gives a background for the region in which it is found.
