Originally named Gumtown, a saw-mill was established here in 1864, with timber exported down the Waiwawa River to Whitianga Harbour. The mill closed in 1889, however by this stage gum digging was in full swing in the area. Diggers obtained near surface Kauri resin, which was made into varnish and linoleum. The resin is produced by the Kauri tree when damaged, and as the trees can live to one thousand years old, they can produce a lot of resin during its lifetime. This fossilised resin today is made into jewellery, and is collectible in itself as specimens, although they are not mineral specimens, despite superficial appearances.

Gold was discovered in 1898, about 15 kilometres south of Gumtown, around the head waters of the Kapowai River. The Welcome Jack, Big Beetle, Golden Reefs, and Kapowai were the main mines, although all had come to an end by 1911. All are in remote rugged heavily forested country, with difficult access. The Welcome Jack is still located on maps, while the others 2 kilometres to the east are very approximate only denoting merely the upper reaches of the river, and are likely lost localities.

Gumtown was renamed Coroglen, and now consists of a tavern, and small hall with a Sunday produce market.
