Breitenberg quarry, Breitenberg - Georgenberg 354m - Kreuzberg 358m / Góra Szeroka - Góra św. Jerzego - Góra Krzyżowa
Name(s) in local language(s):
kamieniołom bazaltu Strzegom - Żółkiewka / Krzyżowa Góra
Closed alkali basalt quarry (volcanic rock defined as a alkali basalt with some bazanite parameters). Originally there were three similarly sized hills formed by the same Miocene vulcano. One hill was almost fully quarried away. Currently the old quarry area is flooded with water and together with two volcanic hills is the last refuge of wildlife in the Strzegom area.
The quarry was founded on the slopes of Góra Szeroka (in German "Breitenberg") in the 19th century, however three centuries earlier, the greatest treasure of the land of Strzegom of those times was mined here - Terra sigillata, highly prized 'medicinal earth' against poisoning or for general cure for any kind of body intoxication. The product from local clay was processed into small tablets and stamped with the coat of arms of the city Striga (later Strigovia, Striegau). Sold in a large area of central Europe, it became the most important export product of the city. Modern studies of preserved tablets have shown that they are made of a mixture of montmorillonite with illite and also the other clay minerals.
One of the few places in Lower Silesia with the possibility to observe a contact between Paleozoic granitoid rocks and Cenozoic lavas from the Central European Volcanic Province. The contact zone was visible until recently in the southern part of the quarry. The colour of granite was turning to reddish, also in a lava flow xenoliths of quartz with tridymite bands occurred and up to 3 cm metasomatic K-feldspar crystals were found. In the northern part of the quarry, a volcanic breccia occurs with quite common chabazite in vugs.
In 1829 German mineralogist Ernst Friedrich Glocker (who is credited with coining many mineral terms, like pyrargyrite - 1831, halite - 1847, sphalerite - 1847, arsenopyrite - 1847), director of the Mineral Cabinet of the University of Breslau (today Mineralogical Museum, University of Wrocław) published research results about Hyalite that he found on the lichens of the genus Lecidea parachena, Parnelia parietina and Lecanuova aurantica, covering the basalt rocks of Góra Krzyżowa. This found was the proof of the present formation time of this mineral.
Note: There is a nearby basalt volcano, approx. 2.5 km west of this quarry - Żelazowska Góra (in German "Brechselberg"), altitude 301 m, between the villages Żołkiewka (Pilgrimshain) and Żelazno (Eisdorf), with olivine and pyroxene phenocrysts as a rock-forming minerals.
