Mentioned briefly in (Bishop, 1965), in a more general explanation of the geology of the Clinton area.
Since before European settlement, lignite seams had been on fire here. It was observed in 1857, and it is said the name was given by early settlers W.B. and A.D. Fuller.
The area has slumped from the fires, and Bishop studied brick-red and black fused sediments from the site. At a petrological level, the fused sediments contained cordierite, plagioclase, mullite, cristobale, and relict quartz.
Burning Plain Road is about 10 kilometres north of Clinton, in a little visited farming area, reached by a series of gravel back-roads. The area is not as extensive as historically stated, and may have been impinged by the surrounding agricultural paddocks. Neither is it listed anywhere as a place of interest to visit, and it is uncertain if the seams are still alight.
