Miniera di Rio Freddo (Val Fredda; ricerca di Peveragno), Permesso Castellar, Peveragno, Cuneo, Piemonte, Italia
Uranium mine located on the N slope of Mt. Besimauda in the little valley of Rio Freddo (Val Fredda) and in the immediate vicinity of Casa Giordano. It is also known as: Val Fredda or San Giovenale mine; Peveragno prospect (official name in the archives). It was part of the more extended Castellar prospecting concession (granted to Montecatini chemical and mining company on an area of 2627 ha around Mt. Besimauda in the municipal territories of Boves, Peveragno, Roccavione, and Robilante). Hence, the name Castellar mine or prospect [derived from an abbreviation of the official designation « Peveragno prospect. Castellar prospecting concession (Ricerca di Peveragno. Permesso Castellar) »], sometimes recorded in literature and mineral collections instead of Rio Freddo or Peveragno, is improper and misleading [it can be confused with the Castellar (also known as Rosbella, Tetti Meni or more properly Torrente Colla) prospect, a small excavation for U ores performed in 1958 to the W of Castellar village in the municipal territory of Boves].
Operations at Rio Freddo started in 1949 and finally ceased in 1962. Montecatini company exploited the U deposit with a prospecting license, periodically renewed till 1962. The main underground works were performed on 15 levels from 796 to 428 m.
Uranium minerals occur in Permian porphyroid rocks (Internal Ligurian Briançonnais Domain).
