Pargasite-schist hosted ruby occurrence about 6 km west of the township of Paranesti, on the north side of the road connecting Mesochori to Perivleto. These ruby occurrences are located within the Nestos Shear Zone.
The ruby at this location is Fe-, Cr-rich, Mg-poor and V-, Ti-, Ga-depleted. It also has anomalously high concentration of Si which is interpreted as being a margarite overprint of the corundum (Wang et al., 2017). This geochemical signature is very close to the pargasite-schist hosted ruby deposits of Fiskenæsset in Greenland (Keulen & Kalvig, 2013) and Winza in Tanzania (Pardieu et al., 2013). Inclusions in the corundum grains were determined to be picotite and hercynite spinels by EMPA analysis (Wang et al., 2017). By comparison to other worldwide ruby deposits, the Paranesti occurrence is most similar to the Winza ruby deposit. The estimated P-T conditions of corundum formation are <7 kbar and <750°C and the surrounding non-corundum amphibolites also contain anorthite, along with relict sillimanite, kyanite, and chlorite/muscovite/epidote overprinting (Wang et al., 2017).

ⓘ Clinochlore var. Pennine Formula: Mg5Al(AlSi3O10)(OH)8 Description: The Wang et al (2017) paper used a diagram adapted from Hey 1954 which include "penninite" (aka. Pennine) based on Si (p.f.u.), Fe(total) and Fe(total)/(Fe+Mg). Pennine has since then (1954) been discredited as a mineral specie by the IMA, therefore it should be called "Clinochlore". However, calling it "Penninite"/"Pennine" based on this diagram gives additional information as to the Si (p.f.u.) content and is therefore relevant. |
