Molybdenite, pyrite, and magnetite mineralisation in quartz vein stock works, with associated minor chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, rare galena, sphalerite, and bismuth sulphosalts, hosted by the Karamea Suite granitoids.

There are four types of quartz veins being either barren, quartz-muscovite-albite, quartz-muscovite-pyrite-chalcopyrite-molybdenite-magnetite, and quartz-muscovite-albite-pyrite-chalcopyrite-molybdenite-bismuthinite.
Coarse pyrite cubes form vugs of sulphides up to 1 cm across. The mineralisation is associated and enclosed by quartz-epidote-K Feldspar, or quartz-sericite-albite alteration envelope, in a chlorite-sericite altered granite

The country rock is Taipo Granite, containing porphyritic microgranite, aplite dykes, and rare pegmatite lenses.

The deposit was discovered by Asarco in 1967. Later explored by Kennecott 1971, Cities Services 1974-1975, and Amoco BP 1981.

It is found on the sides of a steep ridge, separating the Taipo-Karamea Rivers, and Kendall Creek. It is one of the largest molybdenite prospects in New Zealand covering an area 2.7 kilometres by 1.5 kilometres.

The site is approximately 20 kilometres south-east of Karamea. It is just west of Mount Kendall in the upper reaches of the Karamea River.
