Copper is associated with granophyre pegmatites along contact zones of magnetite gabbro and troctolite at Iron Mountain.
Structure: Wichita Mountains Glen Mountains
Alteration: Malachite And Azurite From Veins, In Granite Wash, 20 Ft Thick, In Hennessey Group
Tectonics: Aulacogen
Commodity: Chase (1950a, p. 44-48) is main source for copper veins in this area.
Deposit: The magnetite vein in troctolite (olivine gabbro) is cut by the cuprite-chalcopyrite veins of the granite pegmatites. These are weathered. See chase (1950, p. 44-48), merritt (1938, p. 51, 53, 54), merritt (1939, p. 277-278), and ryan and veeder (1936). Several mines in sec. 7 are mentioned by bain (1904, p. 89, samples w-71 (last drive claim) and w-72 (black diamond mine)), said to contain copper; collected by capt. Andre W jackson meers. W-71 was a 3-ft pit and w-72 was 12 ft wide near c-ne-7, s. Of glen creek.
Development: Ryan and veeder (1936), sheet 1, have magnetite and malachite, mostly in s1/2 of sw-7-4n-16w. Mostly weathered malachite is found; not in place.
Geology: The hennessey onlaps the wichita mountains and contains weathered remnants of local igneous rocks, such As gabbro, granite, and so forth, including associated weathered copper veins. Chase (1950, p. 48) states that the veins are 0.5 in. Thick and are zoned, with cuprite in the middle, metallic copper on either side, followed by malachite, then azurite on the outside. Spencer (1961) discusses the geology.
