Cava Caprara (Cava della Caprara; Cava Capraia), Bacino estrattivo della Madielle, Massa, Provincia di Massa-Carrara (Provincia di Massa e Carrara), Toscana, Italia

This underground marble quarry, located at 840 m a.s.l. at the foot of the northern slope of Monte Focoraccia, is famous for particular precious marbles and marble breccias (Fiore di Pesco, Breccia Capraia, Arabescato, Calacatta, and Statuario commercial varieties).

The quarry is opened in the Focoraccia syncline (or Capraia syncline), which is made up of "Grezzoni" dolostones, Megalodon-bearing marbles, Seravezza Breccias (Brecce di Seravezza) [deriving from a discontinuous Late Triassic formation stratigraphically at the top of the "Grezzoni" dolomitic formation], and Marble sensu stricto.

The "Brecce di Seravezza" Formation mostly consists of metamorphic polygenic breccias with marble and subordinate dolomite clasts, reddish and green phyllites, locally chloritoid-rich. It is characterised by a strong lateral variation in thickness and lithology and interpreted as a rockfall talus deposit consisting of marble and dolostone clasts embedded in a mainly carbonate matrix. Two ornamental stones are quarried from this formation:
- a metabreccia, characterized by white, white-ivory and pale pink-coloured pluricentimetric marble clasts, with thick reddish brown and green veins. The rock mass is mainly calcareous and varies in colour from violet to green to dark bordeaux. It is commercially called "Breccia Capraia";
- a homogeneous multicoloured marble breccia ranging in colour from dark bordeaux to pink, green and white. It has varying crystallisation structures with coarse grain alternating with fine-grained areas. It is commercially known as "Fior di Pesco".

Cavities very rarely occur in marble breccia, while accessory minerals are abundantly found in the cement that binds the clasts.
