Marandoo is an iron ore mine operated by Rio Tinto, 45 kilometres east of Tom Price. The land was excised from the Karijini National Park in 1991, and further a railway line was constructed across the national park to Rio's West Angeles mine. The national park surrounds the mine on three sides.
The mine is at the southern base of Mount Bruce, the second highest mountain in Western Australia.
Many of the cattle stations in the Pilbara are now owned by mining companies. Water pumped from the Marandoo mine is piped to Rio Tinto's 840 hectare farm, with 18 centre pivot systems, watering 40 hectares each. Rhodes grass is produced which is then used as feed for the cattle on the various pastoral stations Rio owns in the Pilbara.
The mine began in 1994, and has an expected life to 2030. Annual production capacity is 15 Mtpa. Proven and probable reserves are 225 Mt at 63.1% Fe. Measured, Indicated and Inferred Resources are 167 Mt at 62% Fe (these figures however are from 2011 so are a bit old).
Mineralisation is in deep dipping banded iron formation with high grade magnetite and hematite. Assorted gangue minerals include carbonate, silicate, phosphorous contaminants.
