The North Boulder Gold Mine was an irregular shaped lease, in the central east portion of the Golden Mile. The Bank of England and Royal Mint leases bordered it to the south, Brown Hill South Extended lease to the east, Oroya East and Hannans Oroya leases to the north, and the Associated mines to the west. Limited information was found.
The original owner was James Craig, then W.G. Brookman, and G. Brookman, the Bank of England Gold Mining Company Limited as a subsidiary lease, and finally the North Boulder Company. The last entity was active across 1896 to 1901.
The lode was stating to be losing its mullocky appearance at depth, and turning into solid grey quartz. A gold discovery was made in 1896, described as a reef in soft schist, with evenly studded fine particles of gold. 'Every fracture, no matter how the rock is broken, shows the rock as if it has been steeped in a solution of well saturated gold'. The following year at the 145 foot level, a discovery was made of 5 foot wide telluride on the Footwall, with the remaining 11 feet showing free gold.
In 1901, Harry Buckley wheeled a truck off the cage, and returned thinking the cage was still there. In a lack of concentration he pushed the truck over the edge of the shaft, dragging Buckley with it, and he fell down the shaft and died. Only a week later, William Foote, and Robert Hunter set charges underground, when one exploded prematurely, killing Foote, and knocking Hunter unconscious.
In 1900, the oxidised ore is almost exhausted, with sulphide ore being sent to New South Wales for treatment. A dividend is paid and the directors deny rumours the lease is almost exhausted. This may not have been true.
After 1901, information dries up. The company is still mentioned on the lease in 1906, exploring for new lodes. It comes to light again briefly in 1915 as the New North Boulder, the source stating after a long struggle the company has discovered a new lode.
The North Boulder lease was resurrected from 1934 to 1937. The North Boulder (Kalgoorlie) Gold Mine NL was floated in 1934 with 100 000 capital, with shares being allocated to the owners of the North Boulder lease, Bank of England lease, and the Australian Gold Development NL. The mine closes again in 1937, citing a lack of funds, and payable ore.
