Mount Shea is approximately 15 kilometres south of Kalgoorlie and 3 kilometres east of the Kalgoorlie-Kambalda Road. The deposit is similar to Hannans South, which is further north, listed under the Kalgoorlie Mindat heading. The Mount Shea area also includes the Rogan Josh and Dalray prospects which will be listed separately. Some historic gold mines are mentioned under the Feysville Mindat heading.
The reference studied five skarns associated with the Mount Shea intrusive complex. They are oxidised endoskarns, replacing faulted and fractured quartz monzodiorite-granodiorite. The ore bodies are up to 140 metres long and 40 metres thick.
The Mount Shea prospect consists of massive, net textured, and breccia skarns, showing multistage epidote, actinolite, albite, magnetite (5%), with minor biotite, calcite and quartz. Gangue and magnetite are in equilibrium with Co-Ni pyrite and chalcopyrite.
The Mount Shea stock-dyke-sill complex post dates the regional D1 folding, and metamorphism, and D2 strike slip faulting. The suite is calc-alkaline, consisting of hornblende-plagioclase monzodiorite, quartz monzodiorite, granodiorite and quartz plagioclase tonalite porphyry.
The Cu-Au epidote skarns are cut by biotite-albite-dolomite schist, and by red biotite-albite replacement bands. Post skarn alteration includes 20 metre thick zones of sericite-chlorite-ankerite schist, confined to two D3 reverse faults. The schists are mineralised with magnetite, pyrite and chalcopyrite, with up to 0.62 Cu and 1.6 g/t Au.
Red sericite alteration is marked by magnetite, hematite and pyrite in fractured porphyry. The biotite-sericite alteration, and oxidised mineral assemblage is linked to the magnetite-hematite bearing gold lode.
